The W-4 Form is the IRS document you complete for your employer to determine how much should be withheld from your paycheck for federal income taxes and sent to the IRS. Accurately completing your W-4 will help you avoid overpaying your taxes throughout the year or owing a large balance at tax time.
The W-4 requires basic personal information, like your name, address, and Social Security number. Previously, the number of allowances and your tax filing status determined how much income tax was withheld from your pay.
Form W-4 tells you, as the employer, the employee's filing status, multiple jobs adjustments, amount of credits, amount of other income, amount of deductions, and any additional amount to withhold from each paycheck to use to compute the amount of federal income tax to deduct and withhold from the employee's pay.
Provide your name, address, filing status, and Social Security number. Your employer needs your Social Security number so that when it sends the money it withheld from your paycheck to the IRS, the payment is appropriately applied toward your annual income tax bill.
If you want to avoid paying taxes when you file your tax return, it is better to withhold more income throughout the year. However, there is a lost opportunity when withholding more than necessary.
If you are single and have one job, or married and filing jointly then claiming one allowance makes the most sense. An individual can claim two allowances if they are single and have more than one job, or are married and are filing taxes separately.
Withhold half of the total 15.3% from the employee's paycheck (7.65% = 6.2% for Social Security plus 1.45% for Medicare). The other half of FICA taxes is owed by you, the employer. For a hypothetical employee, with $1,500 in weekly pay, the calculation is $1,500 x 7.65% (.0765) for a total of $114.75.

It's simple -- just enter the extra amount you want withheld from each paycheck on line 4(c) of your W-4 form. The line is marked "Extra withholding." To request more money be withheld from your paycheck, enter the amount into line 4(c) of the W-4 form.
By placing a “0” on line 5, you are indicating that you want the most amount of tax taken out of your pay each pay period. If you wish to claim 1 for yourself instead, then less tax is taken out of your pay each pay period.
Claiming fewer allowances on Form w-4 will result in more tax being withheld from your paychecks and less take-home pay. This might result in a larger tax refund. On the other hand, claiming too many allowances could mean that not enough tax is withheld during the year.
